Cohab City Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Guttenberg, New Jersey, is led by Master Paulo Alves, a 4th-degree black belt with over two decades of experience on the mats. Born in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Paulo began training at age eight and has since earned numerous titles, including world, South American, Pan-American, and Brazilian championships. Alongside his competitive career in BJJ, he also holds an undefeated record in MMA with three first-round finishes. Paulo shares teaching duties with Sofia Alves and Lowell Bacchus, forming a core instructional team deeply involved in the academy’s daily operations. The academy offers a structured curriculum for both children and adults, with gi classes organized by age groups: kids from 4 to 7 years and 8 to 13 years train separately in focused sessions. Adults have access to both gi and no-gi classes scheduled throughout the week, allowing practitioners to develop skills in the traditional uniform as well as the faster-paced no-gi format. Classes run in the evenings and early mornings, accommodating various schedules. A yoga class is also available on Fridays, providing a complementary discipline aimed at improving flexibility and recovery. Cohab City maintains an open mat session on Saturday mornings reserved for members, fostering additional practice time and sparring opportunities. The consistent presence of the founding instructors ensures continuity in instruction and a shared philosophy centered on technical proficiency and competitive readiness.
