Coachella Valley Judo and BJJ was established in 1987 by Glen Heggstad, whose background spans Shotokan, Kung Fu, Judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Heggstad’s training under Gene LeBell and at Tenri Dojo shaped a philosophy that values perseverance, discipline, and creativity in the martial arts. Today, the academy operates under the leadership of senior black belts Dan McCown and Anthony Mantanona, both 3rd degree black belts in BJJ and Judo, who continue to develop the school’s tradition of blending technical proficiency with a thoughtful approach to teaching. The curriculum at CVBJJ is structured to serve a wide range of practitioners, from young children to adults. The academy offers fundamental gi classes alongside no-gi sessions, ensuring students build a solid technical base before advancing. Separate kids’ classes cater to different age groups starting as young as four years old, while wrestling programs for youth and high school athletes emphasize athletic development and competitive mindset. Additional offerings include women-only classes and specialized training for law enforcement and first responders, reflecting a practical application of BJJ techniques. Training at CVBJJ includes regular open mat sessions for adults, providing space for supplemental practice and skill refinement beyond formal classes. The facility, located in Palm Desert, is wheelchair accessible, supporting inclusive participation. With more than three decades of continuous operation, the academy remains focused on cultivating both the physical and mental aspects of grappling arts, grounded in a lineage that respects tradition while adapting to modern competitive demands.
