Clark Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy in San Diego is led by Professor Clark Gracie, a third-degree black belt and grandson of Carlos Gracie, one of the founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Clark earned his black belt under his father, Carley Gracie, a 9th degree red belt and the last of the Gracie fighters personally trained by Carlos. The academy serves as the headquarters for Gracie Allegiance Team in San Diego, with a team of experienced black belt instructors including Professors Rene Karamanites, Eric Geib, Jose Luis Navarro, Adam Smiarowski, Alan Ortañez, and Paul Yellin. The adult program is rooted in the classic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu tradition, emphasizing self-defense, functional technique, and attention to detail. Students can expect a structured blend of gi and no-gi classes—such as Strategies Gi, Strategies No-Gi, Roots/Foundations, and workshop sessions—where instructors focus on both the principles behind each movement and their practical application. Live rolling and sparring are a regular part of the training, and open mat sessions are available to encourage skill development and camaraderie. The academy welcomes law enforcement, mixed martial artists, and service members, reflecting its practical, real-world approach to Jiu-Jitsu. Youth programs are a significant part of the academy’s identity, with dedicated gi classes for ages 3–5, 6–9, and 10–14, ensuring age-appropriate instruction and progression. Kids also have access to striking classes that introduce boxing, Muay Thai, and kickboxing fundamentals, offering a broad foundation in martial arts. The academy’s instructors are hands-on, often rolling with students and guiding them closely, with an emphasis on respect, perseverance, and building confidence both on and off the mats.
