ChuyJitsu Jiu Jitsu Academy in Yakima is led by Professor Chuy, a black belt under Professor Breno Bittencourt with over 15 years of experience in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts. Professor Chuy’s journey began in MMA and evolved into a deep focus on Jiu-Jitsu, including a competition record across Washington and Oregon from white to brown belt. He values the personal growth and confidence that Jiu-Jitsu brings and continues to expand his knowledge by attending seminars with high-level practitioners such as Kron Gracie. Over the years, he’s trained alongside athletes like Julian Erosa, Meisha Tate, Bryan Carraway, and Gustavo Lopez, and takes pride in sharing this accumulated experience with his students. Classes at ChuyJitsu Academy are built around traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with an emphasis on individualized coaching and steady skill development for all ages. Professor Chuy’s teaching style is straightforward and rooted in the fundamentals, encouraging students to develop not just technique but also self-discipline and resilience. The academy welcomes adults and children alike, and live drilling and sparring play a central role in the curriculum, reflecting the belief that consistent hands-on practice is the key to progress and ranking. Coach Angie Leyva supports the academy’s programs, bringing a background in functional fitness, CrossFit, and Olympic weightlifting, as well as her own experience as a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. She specializes in training women and designing personalized programs that combine physical and mental development. The academy is wheelchair accessible, and students from all walks of life train together, with a focus on building both technical skill and a sense of camaraderie in and out of class.
