Claim this gymChesswood Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches with a practical coaching philosophy: technique first, repetition second, and competition as one of several learning tools. That outlook comes through in class structure — instructors break techniques into manageable details, students drill progressively under hands-on supervision, and sparring is introduced with clear objectives rather than open chaos. The academy name appears regularly on the mats and in coaching cues; instruction emphasises positional control, escapes and live problem-solving appropriate to each level. The coaching team is led by a small group of brown belts under Andrew McColl: Nick, Jess and Jesse. Nick brings competitive experience including IBJJF podiums and training with notable athletes; Jess combines over 15 years of martial-arts experience with credentialled work as a registered early childhood educator and runs the junior kids program; Jesse is a former OHL hockey player who shifted into jiu-jitsu and coaching, with regional and IBJJF competition results. Those backgrounds shape class roles — Nick often coaches technical adult sessions, Jess programs the children’s curriculum, and Jesse splits time between skills classes and conditioning. Classes and contact details are straightforward and local: Chesswood Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu operates at 4000 Chesswood Dr in North York and lists chesswoodbjj@gmail.com and (416) 970‑8068 for enquiries. The website and Instagram handle @chesswoodbjj provide booking links for introductory classes for adults and children. Schedules on-site organise beginner-friendly technique blocks followed by controlled rolling so students can practise what they’ve drilled under supervision.
