Checkmat South Texas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Checkmat South Texas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is led by Professor Danian Torres, a second-degree black belt with a lifelong background in martial arts dating back to 1989. Danian’s experience spans Goju-Ryu Karate, Taekwondo, and Martial Science before he began Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training in 2004. Alongside his wife Kay Torres, also a black belt and educator with over 14 years of BJJ experience, the academy focuses on teaching discipline, confidence, and self-defense through structured martial arts education. Both founders bring extensive teaching experience and emphasize adapting instruction to different learning styles, particularly for children and women. The academy’s curriculum includes gi and no-gi classes for adults, as well as gi-based kids’ classes that emphasize progressive skill development. The instructional team features a range of instructors and coaches holding black, brown, purple, and blue belts, many of whom compete regularly in IBJJF tournaments. This staff includes veterans and lifelong practitioners who contribute diverse perspectives, from competitive strategies to problem-solving approaches shaped by personal challenges. Checkmat South Texas also offers private lessons and supports military, veterans, law enforcement, and first responders with discounted training options. Located in Pharr, Texas, the academy operates out of a wheelchair-accessible facility at 1000 E Center Avenue Suite B. The schedule accommodates drop-in students and provides consistent training opportunities for adults and children alike.
