8415 Reseda Blvd, Northridge, CA
Checkmat Northridge Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is headed by Professor Arnaldo Maidana de Oliveira, a black belt under Gilberto Gabas with a competitive resume that spans multiple IBJJF World Championship medals in both gi and no-gi divisions. Maidana began training BJJ at 16 in his hometown of Aracatuba, Brazil, after early experience in capoeira and taekwondo. His lineage traces back through some of the sport’s most influential figures, including Rickson Gracie and Marcelo Behring. Since earning his black belt in 2013, Maidana relocated to California to focus on coaching and competing within the professional circuit, joining the Checkmat team network. At this Northridge location, instruction emphasizes technical precision and a dynamic grappling style developed through Maidana’s own competition experience. Classes cover gi and no-gi training for adults and children, with an anti-bullying program integrated into the youth curriculum. The academy schedules daily sessions from early morning to evening on weekdays, plus weekend classes, supporting steady progression from fundamentals to advanced techniques. Group classes are complemented by private lessons tailored to individual goals. The facility is wheelchair accessible and offers a range of programs designed to accommodate different training needs. Checkmat Northridge focuses on cultivating skills for both sport and self-defense, reflecting Maidana’s approach that blends traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals with modern competition strategies.
