Celtic Grappling Academy in Carrs Hill, County Cork, is led by Sean Carmody, a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and national MMA champion originally from Bandon. Sean’s competitive experience at national level in both BJJ and MMA informs his teaching, offering students a blend of practical grappling skills and technical depth. Alongside Sean, Niall Sunderland from Clonmel manages the gym’s daily operations and supports the growing community as a purple belt in BJJ and active event organiser. Their combined efforts have shaped the academy’s direction as it transitions from a sports hall setup towards establishing a permanent home in the region. Training at Celtic Grappling Academy covers a broad spectrum of grappling disciplines suited to all ages and skill levels. The programme includes gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for adults, as well as dedicated kids and teens grappling sessions, ensuring a structured progression from fundamentals to more advanced techniques. Freestyle wrestling is also part of the curriculum, complementing the BJJ training and broadening the grappler’s skill set. The academy welcomes drop-ins, making it accessible for newcomers or visitors passing through Cork. The academy’s location at Suite Cottage Business Park in Ballinrea offers a practical base for local grapplers. While the facility is still developing towards a long-term home, the focus remains on consistent training and community growth. With an emphasis on solid technique and competitive readiness, Celtic Grappling Academy aims to cultivate a strong grappling culture in Cork, reflecting the expertise and local roots of its coaching team.
