Cassio Werneck Brazilian Jiu Jitsu opened its doors in Sacramento in 2006, founded by IBJJF World Champion Cassio Werneck. After a lifetime on the mats and decades competing at the highest levels, Cassio set out to build a place where anyone—kids, families, and serious competitors alike—could learn authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from the source. His long career includes a 2003 Black Belt World title, eight Masters World Championships, and guidance for athletes such as Frank Mir, Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, and Urijah Faber. But the heart of the academy remains the day-to-day work of teaching and passing on the art. The instruction team at Werneck BJJ reflects Cassio’s commitment to quality and detail. Black belts including Dan Goodwin, Toby Staley, Mark Kamizaki, and Darren Figgins each lead programs within the broader Sacramento area. At the main academy, classes are structured for adults and kids, with a focus on building strong fundamentals and technical skill. The adults’ program covers both gi and no-gi, and students regularly find themselves challenged to grow—whether they are just starting out or looking to compete at a high level. For younger students, the academy runs separate gi classes for ages 4–7 and juniors 8 and up, as well as a no-gi program for juniors. Toby Staley is especially known for his work developing the kids’ curriculum. Drop-ins are welcome, and the facility is wheelchair accessible with parking available. The core of training at Werneck BJJ is simple: show up, work hard, and learn from instructors who have spent their lives dedicated to the art.
