Carll Clan Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is led by Professors Shawn and Nick Carll, both black belts with decades of experience under 2nd-degree black belt Travis Wells. Shawn, a retired police officer and certified instructor in various defense tactics, brings a practical, self-defense-oriented approach to the art. Nick, who earned his black belt under coral belt Alexey Cruz, combines his law enforcement background with a family legacy in BJJ to shape the academy’s instruction. Their teaching philosophy centers on empowering students through Jiu Jitsu as a means of self-protection, confidence building, and physical fitness, regardless of age or experience. Classes at Carll Clan are structured to support steady progression. Adults begin with fundamentals classes led by brown belts Adam Langelier and Ashley Buckingham, focusing on core techniques in the gi. From there, students can advance to regular adult gi classes taught by Shawn and Nick, as well as specialized competition training with rotating coaches. The academy also offers a full schedule of kids classes, coached by Nick, Jay Day, Anna, and Jeff, emphasizing discipline and confidence in young practitioners. Open mat sessions provide additional training time for all students to drill and spar. The coaching team includes a range of experienced brown and purple belts who bring diverse backgrounds in wrestling, MMA, and striking arts, adding depth to the curriculum. John Lough, the wrestling and takedown coach, has over 20 years of mat experience including MMA competition. Other assistants contribute expertise in tournament coaching, grappling, and fitness. Carll Clan’s facility on Main Street in Gray is wheelchair accessible and supports a family-oriented environment where technical development and practical application coexist.
