Bodega Jiu Jitsu

Bodega Jiu Jitsu in Maplewood, NJ was founded in late 2022 by lifelong martial artists Kyvann Gonzalez and Chas Makk, who opened the academy to share their vision for a modern, practical approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Kyvann Gonzalez, a black belt under Andy and Mike Main (Main brothers > Jamie Cruz > Renzo Gracie), brings over a decade of grappling experience and a strong background in Muay Thai. Chas Makk, the academy’s first black belt under Kyvann, spent his formative years training with Jay Hayes of NJ United, then JT Torres at Essential, before earning his brown and black belts from Kyvann. Together, they have created a school focused on disciplined, no-gi instruction that reflects their own journey and commitment to the art. The adult program at Bodega Jiu Jitsu is built around no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with both fundamentals and advanced classes. Their beginner “Genesis” classes are structured to help new students build confidence and a sense of control from the start, while advanced sessions challenge experienced grapplers to refine technique and adapt under pressure. The academy emphasizes live, adaptive training and intentional learning, with a strong focus on safety and progression. Both founders draw on their backgrounds in striking and grappling to create a curriculum that is fluid, responsive, and rooted in real-world application. Bodega Jiu Jitsu also offers a kids program for ages 6–13, designed to help children develop physical fitness, discipline, and self-confidence through structured BJJ training. Classes are tailored to teach body awareness, emotional control, and teamwork, using partner drills and practical scenarios. The facility is wheelchair accessible and welcomes drop-ins, making it accessible to a wide local audience. With a homegrown Maplewood identity and a hands-on, personal approach, Bodega Jiu Jitsu has quickly established itself as a place for students of all backgrounds to learn and grow on the mats.
