Black Lotus Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy

Black Lotus Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy was founded in 2018 by Joe, Brian, and Jeff—three longtime practitioners with deep roots in the Pedro Sauer association. Brian and Joe both received their black belts from Master Sauer in 2017, while Jeff, a brown belt, leads the kids classes as he advances through the ranks. The teaching team also includes Leo, another Pedro Sauer black belt, and Larry, a third-degree brown belt with a background from the Royce Gracie association. Together, the instructors bring around 80 years of combined experience to the mats, and their foundation in Gracie Jiu Jitsu shapes the academy’s approach. Day-to-day classes at Black Lotus focus on solid fundamentals, with instruction in both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The schedule includes dedicated kids’ classes, adult training, and open mats, with coaches tailoring instruction to each student’s goals—whether self-defense, sport BJJ, or developing MMA skills. The team’s experience extends beyond the mats: Coach Joe is a law enforcement instructor certified in Gracie Survival Tactics, while Brian’s background includes coaching fighters at the UFC level and a long history of cross-training in Muay Thai and wrestling. This breadth allows the academy to support students interested in both traditional and sport-oriented training. The 2,800 square foot facility is located just west of downtown Cleveland in Fairview Park, with a spacious mat area, multiple changing rooms, and accessible amenities. The academy welcomes families—several instructors have their own children training regularly—and continues to grow its youth program. Drop-ins are welcome, and visitors will find a practical, detail-oriented approach rooted in the Gracie tradition, shaped by the real-world experience of its instructors.
