BJJ Swamp Academy

BJJ Swamp Academy has been a fixture in Gainesville since 2015, led by head instructor Kenneth Juan, a third-degree black belt with over twenty years on the mats and a competitive record that includes podium finishes at IBJJF and NAGA events across both gi and nogi divisions. Professor Juan’s lineage traces through Carlos Gracie to Crolin Gracie, then Pablo and Jorge Popovitch, and he earned his black belt under AJ Sousa and Kevin Scott Albertini. The teaching team features black belts like George Panagiotakos and Ron Chopyak, along with experienced brown and purple belt instructors, several of whom bring expertise in striking, women’s programs, and youth coaching. The academy’s schedule covers a wide range of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for adults and children, with both gi and nogi instruction at all levels. Kids start in the Little Gators gi program and can progress through youth and teen classes, including specific nogi sessions and striking fundamentals. Adults have access to structured fundamentals, advanced gi and nogi, wrestling-integrated nogi, and women’s nogi classes, as well as kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA sparring for members. Both beginners and experienced competitors train side by side, with opportunities to focus on self-defense, fitness, or tournament preparation. BJJ Swamp Academy emphasizes a family-driven approach—Professor Juan’s own family trains here—and welcomes students from all backgrounds. The academy is wheelchair accessible and maintains a flexible schedule to accommodate busy lives. Drop-ins are permitted, and new students are encouraged to watch or try a class to get a sense of the training environment and coaching style.
