Big Break Jiu Jitsu in Oakley, California, was founded by David Dean and Samantha Dean, both accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors with years of international experience. David began training in 2004 and Samantha started in 2010, each developing a deep understanding of the art through competition and coaching. Their vision for the academy is rooted in empowering families and uplifting the East Bay through martial arts, drawing on their own journeys to create a space where respect, dedication, and diligence guide every class. Day to day, Big Break offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for all ages, starting with the Little Grapplers program for kids as young as four, and continuing through youth, teen, and adult instruction. Classes are structured to serve both beginners and those pursuing advanced skills, with a focus on practical self-defense and competition preparation. Teens and adults (ages 11 and up) train together in gi-based classes, including sessions with optional sparring, and members have access to open mat times for additional practice. The academy also supports the local homeschooling community as a vendor for Visions and Compass Charter schools. Family ownership shapes the atmosphere at Big Break, and the coaching team is dedicated to helping students build confidence and discipline at every stage. With a wheelchair-accessible facility and a schedule built for busy families, the school welcomes students from Oakley and neighboring areas. The Deans’ hands-on approach ensures that every student benefits from their competitive background and practical teaching style, whether training for self-defense, sport, or personal growth.
