Barrick Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Walkerton is led by Charles Kulp, a brown belt under Bryan Barrick who carries a lineage tracing back to Mitsuyo Maeda through Carlson Gracie. Charles brings over eight years of Jiu-Jitsu experience combined with fifteen years as a state-certified law enforcement instructor, with extensive training in physical tactics and emergency response. The academy is Walkerton’s first dedicated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school, connecting local practitioners to a tradition rooted in one of Northern Indiana’s earliest BJJ tournament pioneers. Students at Barrick BJJ Walkerton begin their journey with a fundamentals program designed to introduce core positions, techniques, and submissions that prepare them for both self-defense and sport competition. This curriculum is structured to accommodate all fitness levels, emphasizing steady progression without requiring prior conditioning. Classes include gi and no-gi training for adults and teens, as well as kids’ programs that run twice weekly in both formats. Open mat sessions provide additional time for practice beyond structured classes. The academy’s approach balances practical self-defense with competitive sport elements, reflecting its founder’s background and the Carlson Gracie lineage’s emphasis on effective, adaptable grappling. Training schedules offer weekday evening classes, making the art accessible alongside work and school commitments.
