Barrick Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Barrick Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was founded on the belief that every student, regardless of age or background, can reach their full potential through the discipline and camaraderie of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Head instructor Bryan Barrick, a 3rd-degree black belt with Carlson Gracie lineage, has taught in Elkhart County since 1998—just after organizing Northern Indiana’s first BJJ tournament. The academy’s teaching philosophy blends self-defense and sport, focusing on practical skills, technical improvement, and personal growth. Classes emphasize partner work over rote drills, aiming to build respect, safety, and confidence on and off the mats. The core of training at Barrick BJJ is a structured curriculum for both adults and children. Adult classes, led by Professor Barrick, welcome all experience levels and foster a straightforward, detail-oriented approach to technique. Beginners and experienced students often work side by side, with instructors ready to split groups when needed. Kids’ classes start from age five and are designed around interactive learning, where students drill and spar with partners rather than practicing alone, developing both skill and sportsmanship. The academy encourages participation in tournaments a few times a year, but competition is always optional. Beyond jiu-jitsu, the school offers a boxing program under coaches with deep competitive backgrounds, including a former Golden Gloves champion. Full-contact sparring is available but never required. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and newcomers can expect a welcoming introduction—loaner uniforms are available, and drop-ins are welcome in all classes. Barrick BJJ remains a long-standing fixture in Goshen, committed to helping each student find their place on the mat.
