Baem Jiu Jitsu - Fremont

Baem Jiu Jitsu - Fremont is led by Denney Choi, a black belt under Milton Bastos, who brings over 15 years of grappling experience to the mats. Denney’s journey includes a background in high school wrestling, a Sankyu rank in Judo, and founding UC Berkeley’s first BJJ club before earning his black belt as the first American promoted by Bastos. His competitive record covers both gi and no-gi divisions at major IBJJF and BJJ Tour events, and he now leads all group and private classes at Baem. Classes at Baem focus on practical progression for all ages, with a strong foundation in traditional gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Adult students can start with fundamentals, move into all-levels gi classes, or branch into no-gi sessions and open mats. There are also specialized programs, including women’s gi classes, Friday takedown sessions with a wrestling emphasis, and a judo program led by Michael Owens. Kids as young as four can join age-grouped BJJ classes, taught by a dedicated team of instructors including Taylor Salimpour, Thomas DeGuzman, Mimi Maier, and Abtin Olaee. The academy is known for keeping things simple: no sign-up or belt fees, no forced long-term contracts, and a straightforward drop-in policy. Students from any background or affiliation are welcome, and the school puts a strong emphasis on a healthy, collaborative training environment. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and visitors are encouraged to try a class to get a sense of Baem’s approach.
