327 W Canal Dr, Turlock, CA
Ares Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Turlock is led by Professor Thiago Ricci, a black belt under Samir Chantre of the Ares BJJ Association. Ricci’s journey began in Portland, Oregon, where he earned his blue and purple belts at Gracie Barra under Fabiano Scherner. He started teaching early, first as an assistant and then leading classes in Scherner’s absence. After nearly five years with Gracie Barra, Ricci moved to California in 2019, joining Ares BJJ in Modesto, where he completed his brown and black belt promotions with Chantre before establishing his own academy in Turlock. The school’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program is built around structured classes for teens and adults, ages 14 and up. Beginners can expect a dedicated fundamentals class focused on foundational techniques and building confidence on the mats, while all-levels sessions bring together a mix of experience for broader technical development. Both gi and no-gi formats are offered, with evening classes throughout the week to accommodate different schedules. Open mat sessions on Fridays give students a chance to drill, roll, and work on their own pace. Ares BJJ Turlock emphasizes growth, respect, and resilience, aiming to help students develop not just technical skill but also discipline and mental toughness. The academy is wheelchair accessible, and drop-ins are welcome. Ricci’s teaching style reflects his own path—grounded in classic instruction, with an openness to sharing knowledge and supporting students at every stage of their journey.
