ARES Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Lathrop operates under the guidance of Professor Samir Chantre, a 4th degree black belt and three-time World Champion who began training at age nine. Samir earned his black belt from Alan Moraes of the Carlson Gracie Team and relocated to Northern California in 2009 to pursue his competitive goals and establish academies in Modesto and Lathrop. Alongside him, Eduardo “Anjinho” Baião, a sixth-degree black belt with over two decades of experience as a competitor, instructor, and referee, and Cassia Paixão Baião, a black belt since 2019 with multiple world and Pan-American titles, contribute to the instruction. The combined expertise of these instructors shapes the academy’s approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Training at ARES BJJ Lathrop emphasizes a traditional BJJ curriculum structured around gi classes, reflecting the Carlson Gracie lineage’s focus. Students progress through fundamentals to advanced techniques under experienced coaches who have competed at the highest levels. The academy offers open mat sessions for adults, allowing practitioners to drill and spar beyond regular class times. The facility is wheelchair accessible, supporting inclusive training opportunities. While the schedule centers on gi training, the school’s leadership brings a deep understanding of competition and self-defense, informed by their own careers and additional roles—such as Eduardo Baião’s work in law enforcement and defensive tactics. This breadth of knowledge influences the teaching style, blending sport and practical application. ARES BJJ Lathrop maintains a steady presence in the area with a focus on developing skilled practitioners through disciplined instruction and ongoing mat time.
