Aontach Jiu-Jitsu

Aontach Jiu-Jitsu was established in 2020 by black belts Ben Judge and Barry Hickey, both under the tutelage of Felipe Martins, a 4th degree black belt. The academy is rooted in the lineage of Team FM Cork, itself affiliated with Nova União, a globally recognised jiu-jitsu team. Situated in Ballyvolane Commercial Park, Cork, Aontach carries forward the tradition of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art that evolved from Kodokan judo in Japan and was refined in Brazil by the Gracie family. The founders bring a wealth of competition experience at both domestic and international levels, shaping the academy’s focus on technical proficiency and practical grappling skills. Training at Aontach caters to a broad spectrum of practitioners, with dedicated classes for children aged 5 to 14, teens, and adults. The curriculum emphasises fundamentals alongside submission grappling and freestyle wrestling, reflecting a comprehensive approach to ground fighting. The coaches encourage a mindset where BJJ is more than a sport—it’s a way of life demanding continual self-improvement. The gym’s schedule includes introductory courses for beginners, squad training for those preparing for competition, and sessions that cover both gi and no-gi techniques, ensuring students develop versatility on the mats. The facility itself offers over 50 square metres of Fuji mats, with separate male and female changing rooms, showers, and toilet facilities. Coaches are fully insured and Garda vetted under IAWA standards, providing a safe and professional environment. Members benefit from free parking and a dedicated recreational area, supporting a community atmosphere within the gym. Open daily, Aontach Jiu-Jitsu remains accessible to locals in Cork looking to pursue Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with a team that honours tradition while embracing the evolving demands of the sport.
