Alpha Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Alpha Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Chantilly, Virginia, was founded by Tad Merryman and Ben Lanier with a mission to guide students from their very first days on the mat through every stage of their development. Head instructor Tad Merryman brings a background in wrestling and years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training, having started his journey at Yamasaki Academy under David Jacobs. The academy is a proud affiliate of Abmar Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu, carrying forward a lineage rooted in technical skill and modern instruction. Alpha’s class structure reflects its commitment to building a strong foundation for all ages. Programs begin with students as young as four years old and continue through youth and adult levels. The academy offers separate classes for kids ages 4–6, 5–9, and 9–14, with advanced and competition tracks available for older youth. Adult classes include fundamentals, all-levels gi, and a women’s program led by black belt competitor Marysia Malyjasiak, who is known for her active presence in top-level IBJJF competition. Open mats are available for both adults and youth, and drop-ins are welcome. The academy emphasizes more than just technical progression. Discipline, respect, and accountability are woven into the curriculum, with students encouraged to lead by example as they move through belt ranks. Alpha is also exploring the use of technology to help students retain and apply what they learn, including the development of a dedicated BJJ training app. The facility includes ample mat space and a lounge area where parents can watch class, creating a practical and family-friendly environment for training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Northern Virginia.
