Alliance BJJ Lakewood is led by James Johnson Jr., whose martial arts journey began in Tang Soo Do under his father’s tutelage and evolved through high school wrestling and service in the US Army, where he competed internationally in Greco-Roman wrestling. This blend of traditional martial arts discipline and high-level wrestling competition shapes the academy’s approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction. Johnson’s focus remains on continuous growth and helping students meet their personal goals, reflecting his own competitive drive and dedication. At the gym, classes are structured to support steady progression. Fundamentals classes cover the core concepts and movements essential to BJJ, laying a foundation for more advanced techniques taught in intermediate and advanced sessions. The academy offers both gi and no-gi training, with no-gi classes designed for students who have a solid grasp of the basics and seek a faster-paced experience. Women’s only classes provide an environment led by female instructors, catering to a range of skill levels from beginners to competitors. Youth programming is divided by age and skill, starting with the Baby Eagles class for 5-6 year olds, which introduces basic skills through games and movement drills to build coordination and focus. Older kids advance through the Eagles 1 and 2 classes, which emphasize technical development alongside lessons in respect and leadership. Open mat sessions are available for adults to drill and spar outside of formal class times. The facility includes parking and wheelchair access, supporting ease of attendance for a diverse student body.
