Akros Academy of Jiu Jitsu is led by Professor Houston Cottrell, a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt with over a decade of teaching experience and more than twenty years in martial arts. Cottrell’s background includes a degree in Intelligence and National Security and recognition for community leadership. His approach emphasizes real-world self-defense skills combined with physical fitness and mental resilience, reflecting a commitment to practical technique and personal development on and off the mat. Classes at Akros are structured to accommodate a range of ages and skill levels, starting with fundamentals for adults and kids that focus on core techniques such as escapes, sweeps, submissions, and positional control. The curriculum advances to more complex submissions and strategic gameplay in the advanced classes. Women’s-only sessions create a focused environment for female practitioners to build confidence and skills tailored to their needs. For the youngest students, Mini Jiu-Jitsu introduces basic movements and coordination with parental involvement to foster early engagement.
