10th Planet Jiu Jitsu - South Bay in Chula Vista is led by PJ “Butter Panther” Barch, a second-degree 10th Planet black belt and top-ranked no-gi competitor. The academy traces its roots back to 2016, when Barch started his first program with help from Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez. Through years of relocations, backyard training, and makeshift dojos, the team’s persistence built what is now a state-of-the-art no-gi facility on Third Avenue. The academy’s story is inseparable from Barch’s hands-on leadership and the loyalty of students who followed him through every stage. The training at South Bay is structured around the 10th Planet no-gi system, with a clear progression from Level 1 fundamentals to advanced Level 3 classes. Adult students move through beginner, intermediate, and mixed-level sessions throughout the week, with Barch and a coaching staff of black and brown belts leading instruction. Programs also include women’s no-gi, a Spanish-language class, and dedicated competition training, reflecting the academy’s active footprint in events like ADCC. Drop-ins are welcome, and the facility is wheelchair accessible. Youth programs at 10th Planet South Bay serve ages 4–6 in the Little Panthers class and ages 7–14 in the main kids’ program, both built around practical no-gi skills, confidence, and teamwork. Coaches like Dawna Gonzales and Joey Balistreri focus on making jiu-jitsu accessible and fun for young students. The academy’s growth and competitive presence, particularly in no-gi grappling, give it a distinct identity within the Chula Vista area.
