10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Newark was founded in 2015 by Jon Borrows, the only Eddie Bravo black belt in Central Ohio. Jon grew up in Newark and built the academy so local adults and kids could train authentic no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu without leaving town. His approach is rooted in the 10th Planet system: practical, modern grappling for self-defense, MMA, and competition, with every class informed by his own years under Eddie Bravo and his bronze medal experience at the IBJJF No-Gi Worlds as a brown belt. Jon’s coaching philosophy is direct—no rigid tradition, no untested theory, just proven technique and honest effort. He personally leads every kids class and is on the mat with adults each week, ensuring consistent, hands-on instruction. Classes at 10th Planet Newark are built around real-world schedules, with morning, evening, and weekend slots for both adults and kids. The adult program is strictly no-gi, following the 10th Planet curriculum with step-by-step fundamentals, live sparring in every session, and a focus on skills that hold up under pressure. Beginners are guided by senior teammates so nobody gets lost or left behind, and there’s a clear emphasis on hard work over ego. Friday nights bring an all-level open mat, and Saturday mornings include boxing with Coach Artie for those looking to cross-train. For younger students, the academy offers three age-based no-gi groups: Little Ninjas (age 5), Kids (6–8), and Youth (9–13), plus a dedicated kids competition practice. Every class is structured, supervised, and focused on safety, discipline, and building real confidence—no busywork or participation trophies. Parents are welcome to watch from the edge of the mats, and Jon’s local roots mean he’s invested in every child’s growth, both on and off the mat.
